Darfur, Sudan

So often my heart breaks over the thousands of lives lost in this violent genocide. Hundreds of thousands are living in tents in refugee camps (which does not ensure their safety either).
If you don't know the history, the extremity of the situation, or how you can help-please ask me...I'm always happy to talk about it with you.
My organization, Church World Service, works in Sudan and had this update to share today...
DARFUR
400,000 dead,
2.5 million displaced,
10,000 dying every month
Sudan--Hopes that the signing of a Darfur peace agreement in May 2006 would help settle one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises have been dashed. Instead, the situation in Darfur has deteriorated steadily.
Since July 2004, CWS has supported the work of the Action by Churches Together (ACT)-Caritas coalition, a joint ecumenical operation that combines the efforts of more than 60 organizations in responding to needs in Darfur.
Successful CWS-supported efforts in the last three years include: construction or rehabilitation of 22 clinics and two rural hospitals (all providing mother and child health care), 240 wells, and 34 schools; delivery of non-food packages to over 65,000 households; supplementary feeding for children and pregnant or lactating mothers; and psychosocial and counseling programs.
In 2007, CWS will be helping ACT to assist displaced families in a number of ways, including constructing 82 new water points and rehabilitating and maintaining others; constructing 1,150 latrines and rehabilitating 2,025 others; and mobilizing communities to manage their own environment and sanitation.
Conflict-affected communities will have access to ten ACT-run clinics in camps, one in a host community, and two mobile clinics, and up to 12,000 children and 8,000 lactating or pregnant women will receive nutritional assistance.
And plans call for more than 5,000 households to participate in trainings in improved farming methods. They’ll also receive seeds, tools, and assistance in creating and maintaining 31,000 trees in community-owned nurseries--trees that will be distributed mostly to female-headed households.
Plans are also underway to build seven schools and rehabilitate and maintain others, along with the provision of school materials, recruitment of female teachers, training for administrators, and encouragement for female students.
Emergency response and preparedness training for local partners is also planned, along with assistance to communities in dealing with trauma, taking charge of their own protection needs, and supporting them in working towards building a sustainable peace.

My Favorite Things

Rain drops on roses and
whiskers on kittens,
bright copper kettles and

warm woolen mittens :)

OK-I like some of those things, but here are some others...

Playing cards and drinking with Oscar (he's a bad influence) ;)

Watching Smokie play with the nature in our back yard (she's clueless she's on a turtle)...
and Emmy enjoying the "Lisa Dahlias" named after my late friend from high school, Lisa Hunt.

Since moving to Indianapolis, I've enjoyed watching the Colts games on Sundays (except for recent Sundays) :X

I love that there is a Macy's en route to and from work!

I love that I can meet Ryan for lunch at La Hacienda when he's free- WAY better than when he had to drive 2 hours to be in the same town as his wife!

I love that there is a canal that runs behind my office for walks during lunch in good weather.
I love when my friends and family come to visit us OR when we have an opportunity to visit them!
What are your favorite things?

Indy Zoo Date

Saturday night Ryan and I went to dinner at his favorite downtown brewry, The Ram, and then on to the Indianapolis Zoo to see all their lights! We love our zoo pass that lets us pay once and go "free" the rest of the year.
The lights were SO cool! They were in the shapes of giraffes, otters, snakes, eagles, monkies...every animal seemed to be recreated in Christmas lights.
We especially enjoyed watching the polar bears and brown bears at night in this cold weather. They were more active than we used to seeing!
We took a GOOFY trainride around the zoo and listened to an "elf" DJ W-Mas 1225 on the zoo's "Christmas radio"! UGH...we probably would have been very imporessed had we been 4 years old. BUT all in all, it was a fun way to spend the evening together.

Thanksgiving

Sorry it took so long to post these pictures! We had a wonderful visit with Ryan's family over Thanksgiving. His family graciously included me in my first Thanksgiving with them by allowing me to include some of my traditions, like reading scriptures on thankfulness and sharing before dinner what we are thankful for! The meals (we had 2 thanksgiving dinners in Robinson) were delicious. New to me are noodles at the dinner. Even more interesting are nesting the noodles in a pile of mashed potatoes! Long live the starches! :)
Ryan brought his new favorite video game "Guitar Hero" and two guitars so all the family could take turns competing against each other in the Corn basement! :)
For our 2nd Thanksgiving, we went to Chris & Brandi's (Denise's son & daughter-in-law) home and had a great meal and time with lots of little ones! Ryan was enjoying a chance to read to Denise's grandson!
I traveled to Evansville on Saturday to see friends. I hadn't been to Evansville in over two years and was delighted to reunite with my former boss, Sherrianne Standley. We met at USI and she proudly showed me the new campus library, named after the first university president and her first boss at USI. She retires this year and is a proud grandma. We went by her daughter's home and picked up Layton so she could show her off.
After that I went to Turoni's where dear friends came and visited with me. Sarah & Stew Armstrong & their two kids, Chris Bloom, Cheryl and Jeff Folz with their 9 day old little girl!, Rebekah and Ryan Seaton, Cheryl Pfieffer and Leslie Palmer who was home from Madison to see her family. It's hard being so far from such special people in my life, but I am very thankful for opportunities to reconnect from time to time!

Weekend to Remember

Weekend to Remember - An Experience You'll Never Forget

What a great weekend we had in Louisville, thanks to the thoughtful wedding present from my parents! FamilyLife ministry hosted a great conference called Weekend To Remember which dealt with issues like: achieving oneness in marriage, conflict resolution, communication styles, intimacy, leaving a legacy, etc. Ryan & I realized that in our young marriage we've started to focus on and be critical our differences, rather than celebrating them as we did when we were first dating. Most of the 12 sessions had projects for us as couples to work on alone and then discuss together.
It was an easy way to deal with so many issues that I assume most couples know they "should" talk about, but aren't sure when or how. The conference made it really easy and fun. It's great to have a renewed vision for our marriage and renewed excitement about my unique husband.
We'd recommend it to any couple that wants to enhance and strengthen their marriage. There were couples there married 10 days and some married 38 years! It's got information all wives/husbands can benefit from!
I say plan it to celebrate an anniversary or ask for the registration as a Christmas gift. It's FUN & so encouraging.
Saturday night was free for a "date night" and we had fun at "Maker's Mark Lounge was great-Ryan's steak was better than my pork chops so I "helped" him finish that off! He liked his white cheddar & lobster mashed potatoes and I loved my pecan and pear salad! YUMMY! Fun to get dressed up and go out for a fun night on the town! We popped into a restaurant next door after dinner called the Red Star for a drink and desert before returning to our hotel for the evening.
Saturday marked 9 months since our wedding on Feb. 18! Happy anniversary to us!

Another highlight of the weekend was running into some dear friends from my days in Evansville, Rachel & Eric Rutherford. Eric & Rachel helped Jeff with the college ministry at U of Evansville and were dear friends of ours. I haven't seen them in a while and so it was WONDERFUL to have so much time together! The Rutherfords have recently relocated to Louisville and are excited to welcome their second little girl to their family this spring! It was really fun to spend time together with them over our lunches Sat & Sunday.

Ryan's 29th Birthday

We had a great start to the weekend by celebrating his actual birthday (11/10/06) with his parents at our favorite local pizza joint, Bazbeaux Pizza! Thanks to Brandi & PJ, he loves anchovies and gets his own pizza! Even our cat Oscar wasn't sure what to do with that little fishie!

Apparently Ryan knew he was getting Guitar Hero II from me-as evidenced by him "playing the box". :) He was pretty happy with his favorite baseball team winning the World Series and equally happy that his parents got him an Albert Puljos jersey! AND my parents got him his greatly desired Walter Payton jersey! Go sports!? ;)

How amazing are our friends to travel a couple miles locally, from Vincennes (2 hours) and Evansville (3+ hours) to celebrate Ryan last Saturday? We had a great time eating downtown at The Ram and drinks at The Claddagh Irish Pub. V3 (Vincennes 3), returned to a favorite venue (our living room) for a short performance for the "after party". Thanks everyone for making it such a wonderful weekend!

Pseudo Thanksgiving

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34

One of my greatest joys these past few years has been the blessing of my weekly study and fellowship with incredible women here in town. This past Tuesday, fifteen of us began the holiday season with our 3rd annual "Psuedo Thanksgiving" where we try out recipes for the "real Thanksgiving" and make time to reflect on God's goodness to us.

Instead of a typical centerpiece, we all wrote things we were thankful for on ornaments so that the center of our meal would literally be praise and thanksgiving. We gave thanks for God's grace, presense; our family/friends; physical, emotional and relational healing; our pets; ice cream, and many other things!
